Elwood Curtis’s college dream is shattered along a two-lane Florida highway. Suffering an innocent misstep, he is sentenced to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory deep in the Jim Crow South. He meets another ward, the all-seeing Turner. Two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner shares survival tips, Elwood clings to his optimistic worldview. Against the backdrop of the emerging civil rights movement, Elwood and Turner seem far removed from the polished rhetoric of the Reverend Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s cruelty, Elwood tries to hold on to his humanity, giving Turner a new perspective.
